Last week, a file association bug was discovered. While it affected both versions 1803 and 1809, it was the former that proved to be the problem. Microsoft confirmed a cumulative update for Windows 10 version 1803 was the root cause. The company says the problem stops users from changing default applications to new formats. As noted, the problem was caused by cumulative updates, specifically KB4464330 for version 1809, KB4462933 and KB4462919 for version 1803. “After installing this update, some users cannot set Win32 program defaults for certain app and file type combinations using the Open with… command or Settings > Apps > Default apps. In some cases, Microsoft Notepad or other Win32 programs cannot be set as the default,” Microsoft says on a post that appears on the release page for each update.
Fix
While Microsoft works on a fix, the company offers a workaround. Users can try to change default format on applications and it may work. Admittedly, that’s hardly a concise way to solve the problem and is certainly not a guarantee. In the meantime, Windows 10 users will have to wait while Microsoft readies its fix. The company says the patch should be available before the end of November. Sadly, that means the fix will not be ready for next week’s Patch Tuesday cumulative updates.
