It seems Microsoft is now ready to normalize the ARM offering as part of the main Surface Pro series. That means with the release of the Surface Pro 9, the company will effectively kill off the Surface Pro X. In its place will be an ARM version of the Pro 9, alongside the Intel variant. Microsoft will power the ARM configuration with its own Microsoft SQ3 chipset, a custom version of Qualcomm’s Snapdragon 8cx Gen 3 SoC. Microsoft is once again pushing its Windows on ARM output. The company has already announced Project Volterra, the first Windows on ARM desktop PC. This is a development kit that Microsoft introduced earlier this year.
Surface Pro 9
As usual, Microsoft will also offer Intel variants of the Pro 9. Specifically, it seems the company will ship the hardware with Intel’s 12-th generation chips, which will likely come from the P-series family. This means the new hardware will provide a noticeable performance boost over last year’s Surface Pro 8. According to the report from Windows Central, there are currently no plans to offer an AMD variant of the Pro 9. As always, there will be a mix of variants ranging across connectivity options (5G or not), storage sizes, and RAM configurations.
