The update released in October of 2017, so Microsoft has been slow to fix this issue, but users will be relieved all the same. Though many will have used workarounds already, newly upgraded users won’t have the same hassle. According to Microsoft, the issue happens “when the Windows Update servicing stack incorrectly skips installing the newer version of some critical drivers in the cumulative update and uninstalls the currently active drivers during maintenance.”
Not Quite Stable Yet
However, users should be aware that installing the update at this moment could cause more issues. In the known issues section, Microsoft admits that this update can cause some devices to fail to start. “After installing this update, some devices may fail to start, and return INACCESSIBLE_BOOT_DEVICE,” says the documentation. “Microsoft is working on a resolution and will provide an update in an upcoming release.” Thankfully, there’s a workaround for this, but it requires uninstalling the update via command prompt or using recovery options. You should also make sure your anti-virus is compatible with the meltdown and spectre registry key, or you’ll be unable to update. Though you can download the update manually, it’s also available via the automatic channels. If you’re having any issues with USB devices at all, it’s worth giving it a go, provided you know the risks and back up your PC.
